First Nations Job Strategy

First Nations Job Strategy

A strategy for how a First Nations workforce can be developed to ensure full participation in the clean energy industry

The First Nations Clean Energy Strategy was a collaborative project completed for the First Nations Clean Energy Network by Alinga Energy Consultants, Indigenous Energy Australia, the Institute for Sustainable Futures, and SGS Economics.

The strategy, and the work it consisted of, was extremely broad, ranging across remote communities, industrial hubs, and communities that intersect renewable energy zones. The work entailed one-on-one interviews, technical data analysis of ABS data and other sources, and community workshops.

The final strategy took a ‘whole of career’ view providing numerous recommendations to federal and state governments and industry about how First Nations people can fully participate in the clean energy revolution. This meant including recommendations that provides jobs now and bolstered jobs for the next 20 years.

Recommendations included: the necessity and how to shift industry culture, improving STEM in schools, establishing knowledge sharing and coordination of projects, setting up longitudinally focussed pre-employment and career programs, supporting Aboriginal people to ‘work in two worlds’, etc.
