Yarrabah Microgrid Project

Embedding community aspirations into the microgrid

The Yarrabah Microgrid Project has prioritised community engagement and cultural integration from the outset, focusing on creating genuine interest and ensuring the project reflects local aspirations.

Indigenous Energy Australia (IEA) began by fostering relationships through informal conversations and attending community events, gradually building trust and excitement for the project. Workshops were then organised in close collaboration with local leaders and organisations, ensuring that all voices were heard.

These sessions were held in community spaces with a welcoming atmosphere, providing food and refreshments to encourage participation. Activities such as group discussions and visioning exercises allowed the community to explore how the microgrid could meet their long-term goals, such as job creation, reducing living costs, and preserving cultural practices.

IEA developed culturally relevant materials that avoided technical jargon and used plain language, visuals, and local examples to explain renewable energy concepts. The materials were co-developed with the community, ensuring they aligned with local knowledge and values.

The project emphasised that the microgrid was more than just an energy solution – it was an opportunity for Yarrabah to take control of its energy future in a way that supports self-determination and long-term benefits. Community aspirations, including equitable energy distribution and job creation, were deeply embedded in the project plan, ensuring it delivers outcomes that resonate with Yarrabah’s cultural and social priorities.
